"I went to an in-person yoga class (this is about 15 years ago) the instructor really wanted me to do that particular stretch at some point during the class. I tried in the moment to explain to her that, due to a past sports injury, it would not be wise for me to do that and would surely just lead to a knee injury rather than any yoga growth. So, I never went back and have never done a class where the teacher could see me again.
There are particular poses that I get more out of by doing a modification and I do those because I am a smart woman who knows my own body. Feeling pressed by that instructor felt horrible, especially since she was wrong and encouraging me to move my body in a way that was going to cause injury, not growth or strength. I am really looking forward to learning mindfulness practices and all the other great stuff, but doing the once a month class, even though you won’t be watching, is quite a step for me. To allow engaging in yoga in a way that might solicit feedback (which I definitely want) will be interesting. I am only able to make this step because it is with Eva, who I know respects each person, their knowledge around their own mind, body and spirit, and what level they feel right about."
